So they just give us those details because potentially they could charge back the dealer 9f we replace an engine. But they have showed us cases out in the field where the tuners directly caused engine failures. It's a fresh new engine that has potential but gm is working out it issues. We have an engine ordered for one and it's currently on backorder. Right now the big problem is getting parts. Unfortunately, yes they have issues and we have a technical support team we contact for issues that we can't resolve. We get to a point that we can no longer test or diagnose what the cause is. I think engineering is looking at this problem and trying to figure out what going on.Īs technicians we can diagnose it but determining what caused the rings to fail would require testing the oil, material quality, something that engineering would have to research. ![]() We have seen engine pistons ring failures causing cylinder wall damage without any known root cause of failure. Although I'm not a full time Diesel tech, i am learning them especially now that they are more common. if mpg is more important than having the desired brand truck you want. Maybe im biased here but honestly, you want better mpg's, do your research and find the best stock diesels out there. in the past ive had a tuned sierra and to this day i dont remember any significant memory of how a tuner helped me save money or get amazing mpg. unless of course its a customer pay ticket. They have to give auth on a engine prior to ordering it. GM is the one who gives us the authorization on what to replace on an engine failure or high cost repair and lately they have been only giving auth on rebuilding instead of replacement. I don't care ultimately, we as technicians still get paid weather warranty or customer pay but if i owned a new GMC i would hate having my brand new engine torn down due to a measly tuner that saves me a few bucks at the fueling station. they have put out bulletins in service information and during our GM training classes, are showing us evidence on internal damage characteristics directly linked to tuners. And if under warranty, gm is getting smarter at determining what damages are characteristics of tuned ECM's or plug in tuners. All you are doing is shortening the life of your engine and putting abnormal stress to it. ![]() if GM could squeeze more horsepower and mpg's out of this engine they would. It does not store any personal data.As a GM technician, tuners are a waste of money.
